North-winds >>> Flying at Santa Clara
Santa Clara La Laguna is based on the western side of the lake. From the take- off you can see clearly below the towns San Pe- dro – San Juan – San Pa- blo and San Marcos La Laguna. Here, thanks to the heat given by the sun, thermals are formed from very early in the morning and often you can reach altitudes up to 800 above the lake.
A new world of adventure opened with the discovery of paragliding at Santa Clara. For many years it was only flown at Panajachel with south-winds. When there was north-wind, there was simply no flying at the lake.
This site has a great potential in paragliding flying. Whilst south winds are relatively predictable, north winds tend to vary a lot. This is why we never stop getting surprised when flying here. Santa Clara is a magical site for active flying, because of its ever changing weather conditions.
